Apply to a Hungarian university
6–9 months before startTop universities include the University of Debrecen, Semmelweis University (medicine), Budapest Metropolitan University, and Óbuda University. Many programs are in English. Apply via the Stipendium Hungaricum portal for scholarships or directly to the university.
Receive acceptance and secure financing
4–8 weeks after applyingAfter admission, the university issues an acceptance letter. If applying through Stipendium Hungaricum, decisions are made by March/April. Self-funded students should confirm their financial plan as proof of €500/month equivalent is required for the visa.
Apply for student visa at Hungarian Embassy
8–10 weeks before departureApply at the Hungarian Embassy or Consulate. Hungary does not have an embassy in Zimbabwe — apply at the Hungarian Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa or through a third-country Hungarian consulate. Processing takes 3–4 weeks.
Arrange accommodation
2–3 months before startHungarian universities offer dormitory accommodation from €150–€250/month. Apply through the university accommodation portal as soon as you are admitted. Private apartments in Budapest are €300–€600/month. University cities like Debrecen are more affordable.
Arrive and register with authorities
First 2 weeks in HungaryWithin 15 days of arrival, register your address at the local government office (Kormányablak). Apply for a residence permit at the Regional Directorate of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF). Your university international office will assist.
Enrol and settle in
Enrollment weekComplete enrollment, get your student ID card (Neptun code), and register for courses in the Neptun educational system. Open a Hungarian bank account (OTP Bank or K&H are popular). Get a social security number (TAJ card) for healthcare.
