Select your university and course

6–12 months before start

Research UCAS-listed universities. Use the UCAS system to apply for up to 5 undergraduate courses. For postgraduate programs, apply directly to each university. Check entry requirements carefully — most require IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

Receive your CAS number

4–8 weeks after offer

Once unconditionally accepted, your university will issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number. This is mandatory for your visa application. Do not book flights until you have your CAS.

Apply for your UK Student Visa

3 months before course start

Apply online through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal. Pay the £490 visa fee plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (£470/year of study). Book a biometric appointment at a Visa Application Centre.

Arrange accommodation

As soon as offer received

Apply for university halls of residence — most guarantee accommodation for first-year international students. Apply as soon as you receive your offer. Private student accommodation (Unite Students, iQ) is the alternative.

Arrive and complete arrival formalities

Before course start

On arrival, collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from a local Post Office within 10 days. Register with a local GP (doctor). Attend your university's international student orientation.

Enrol and begin your studies

Enrollment week

Complete in-person enrollment at your university. Get your student ID and library card. Set up your student bank account (Monzo, Starling, or HSBC international student accounts are popular). Register for modules.
